Things to do in Kendal
It goes without saying that when you’re looking for things to do in Kendal, you can in fact just embrace the countryside. The Lake District is one of the most beautiful parts of the UK and somewhere that welcomes tourists from all corners of the globe.
You can take a short walk across Loughrigg Tam, or a more challenging route taking in Loughrigg Fell and Rydal Water. Alternatively take a hike to Ambleside and then use the local waterways to make it back to your Windermere Boutique Cottage.
While there are a number of historic buildings in the area, it would be impossible not to point out Kendal Castle. It’s one of the major tourist attractions in Kendal, albeit now in ruins, but it also provides wonderful views across the town.
Museum of Lakeland Life and Industry
Cumbria’s largest parish church is in Kendal, the 18th century Holy Trinity. Alongside it however is Abbot Hall, home to the Museum of Lakeland Life. If you’re not already feeling like one of the locals as you soak in the hot tub at your Windermere spa cottage, take a wander down to the permanent exhibition instead.
The Brewery Arts Centre
After a night of culture? Then check the listings for the Brewery Arts Centre. The multi-purpose complex has an ever changing array of stage shows available. Expect to see the best in theatre, film, music and dance.
Elsewhere on the outskirts of Kendal, is another historical castle at Sizergh Castle. The stately home is technically 4 miles outside of the quaint market town, but is worth visiting. As well as the castle itself, the gardens are magical all year round.
Another popular attraction offering things to do in Kendal and nearby, is the old Levens Halls. It’s a fascinating manor house, which can be dated back to the year 1350. It’s also how the grounds have developed over the years which are also appealing. Everything from the Elizabethan era architecture to the impressive topiary displays.
Even if you’ve booked into a spa retreat in the Lake District in order to escape life’s temptations, you’d be forgiven for visiting Hawkshead Brewery. After all, brewing beer has been a traditional British past-time for generations. As such raising a glass at the popular brewery is no different, plus it gives you the chance to sample local ale.
