Windermere Marathon 19th May 2019

Put on your running shoes, ready for the Windemere Marathon 2019. Taking place on 19th May, with the start line at Brathay Hall in Ambleside.

About the Windermere Marathon

Having first started in 2007 the Windermere Marathon has quite literally been running ever since.

The event last year was one of the hottest yet, with approximately 1000 participants on the starting line.

The route covers 26 miles and is one of the most scenic marathons in the UK. Starting at Brathay Hall, it then journeys through the beautiful Windermere countryside. Around the 4 mile mark the race passes through Hawkshead Village. Then at the half way point, runners cross the River Leven, returning to Bowness-on-Windermere, ready to finish at Low Wood Bay.

So if you want to stay close to the action, it’s an ideal time to book a cottage break in Windermere.

Key locations during the route:

  • Start/Finish – Brathay Hall
  • 4 Miles – Hawkshead Village
  • 7 Miles – Devil’s Gallop
  • 12 Miles – Newby Bridge
  • 20 Miles – Bowness-on-Windermere
  • 24 Miles – Low Wood Bay

The 2018 winner was no stranger to running a marathon, with Neal Emmerson the first to cross the finish line. Just one of 7 runners to break the 3 hour mark with an impressive 2 hours and 44 minutes. The ladies race was led by Sally Ford, crossing the line at 3 hours 18 minutes.

Although, for many, it’s not about winning or even what time you complete the course in. As with any sporting event, it’s often just the taking part that counts.
